See if free agency activity helps when you watch the Chicago bears online this season. Their recent dive into the free agency pool has acquired the services of TE Matt Spaeth after cutting ties with Brandon Manumaleuna who was QB Jay Cutler's go-to guy. But these tight end deals were just the start.

The Bears signed second-round pick, defensive tackle Stephen Paea and third-round grab safety Chris Conte. Then Chicago reunited receivers Sam Hurd and Roy Williams who played together in Dallas. A surprising move was signing former Jet Vernon Gholston. He was a bust in New York as a pass rusher. But, hopefully a 4-3 defense and a new town can work some motivating magic on Gholston under coordinator Rod Marinelli. Since the Bears got Gholston services reportedly at league minimum, the gamble here is a no-brainer.

Although expectations are little for Spaeth to have a great impact in the Bears' passing game, Hurd and Williams should. Williams had his best seasons in 2006-07 under Mike Martz in Detroit. He pulled in 82 grabs gaining 1,132 yards scoring seven times in '06 and grabbed 64 passes, totaling 838 yards with five TDs in '07 missing four games. He won't be pulling in 100-plus receptions. But, grabbing 65-70 should be easy since he will be slotted as the Bears No. 1 receiver.
